“Why didnt anyone tell me my ass was so big?”

Dragonfly

Although my ass IS big, that was actually a reference to the fact that I inadvertently made practically the entire site bold from the auditorium on Wednesday. Oops. When youre closing a bold tag, you really need to use “b” and not “p”. Ah well. I knew that someday a crack would appear in the armor. Someday my veneer of perfection would wear off and Id expose the humanity behind the curtain.

Try not to think about veneered curtains too hard.

Anyway, Steve is here at the moment, having come up on his day off yesterday. Sweet. We watched the Phils lose (could I *be* worse luck for Philly teams?) and wandered into a couple bars… pretty typical Thursday night, actually.

After Emilys continuing car debacle yesterday, I ran into a UPS man, which was sweet because Ive had my 360 boxed up since about 30 minutes after the RROD happened. Now Ill keep track of the thing as it makes its trip to Texas and (hopefully) back. The centerpiece of my home media center is gone – lame!

Thats enough for now. Time for the Neighbor and some work, probably in that order.

I should LiveBlog the Shoah event

Dragonfly

But I have to work it, sort of.

Im doing the thing I do for Hipster Dave tonight, this time for Bette Midler and the USC Shaoh Foundation Institute. Honestly. Thats what its called – the Shaoh Foundation Institute. More than a Foundation, more than an Institute, its both. Amazing.

Ill update you later, but at the moment, Ive already been sitting 7 feet from Speilberg, Billy Crystal almost walked into me, and I will have the pleasure of singing “Whale of a Tale” under my breath at Kirk Douglas. Oh, and dont forget Bette. Im sure there will also be other folks here of note, but I may not see them, given my position next to the stage and behind the black curtain.

At least I can stare at the Harlettes.

More later.

Update: I didnt see any more celebs, so theres no one else to name drop, I guess. There was this guy who looked all sketch who got kicked out while we were wrapping up (better late than never, I say). It was weird, there was a group of stragglers to whom he was attached, and when security called his name and brought him aside for a minute, there was nary a ripple. It was as if the group hadnt even noticed that one of its own had been pulled out for questioning. I couldnt hear everything that was being said, but the gist was that he wasnt on the invite list and wasnt welcome as a crasher. Whatever, I was more interested in the bizarre non-reaction from the group.

Microsofts Anti-Piracy Day and Internet Infamy

Dragonfly

Thats two things, for those of you keeping score. First, Microsoft has announced that today is global antipiracy day. I didnt know about it in advance, so I couldnt get tickets to the conference, but Ill be down at the local bar celebrating my new knowledge with a pint. In the spirit of getting people educated about piracy, heres a list of things about piracy that are just as true as whatever Microsoft is going to tell you.

  • Piracy encourages software purchases
  • Piracy drives the purchase of hardware
  • Piracy keeps Microsoft at #1 in OS/Office Suite Sales
  • Piracy is bad for open source

I dunno. Im sure theres more, but Im too focused on internet infamy to care.

Two weeks ago when the Sarah Palin Report was out, I put it in my temp folder and told a few people about it. Someone leaked it to somewhere, because before the day was out on the 9th, it was on DailyKOS, Reddit and a bunch of other places, all linking to where I have it. I dont know why they didnt pull it themselves to host, but whatever. So right now, of my top 20 search terms, 17 are about Palin. The other three are about clapboard – #2 is, oddly, clapboard.org. Then #5 is clapboard, then #20 is “clap board”. To give you an example of how little traffic I get on a regular basis, this tiny thing gave me a 70x bump in traffic. Unfortunately, none of it came to the front page, really. Even the conservatives who came to get it to make fun of liberals who “fell for” the report didnt bother to come to the main site.

But thats why I have Kurt and Emily – theyll drive traffic here with their musical tastes. Have you heard Krols #3? Its pretty rad.

Lost/Home Mix – THE METRIC PLAYLIST

Dragonfly

When youre lost you should never lose your cool. It can easily happen enough and can get you in more trouble than you already are in. So the next song is by Overseer. A dance group that should have come out with a new one by now but havent. They do the heavy dance and keep it going with the smoother tracks. As nervous and angst ridden as you may get when you have no idea where to go or you know where to go but have no idea how to get there, always keep it in check. When those around you are getting lost, never, never lose your composure. Wed all be on the side of the road using our thumbs to catch a lift.

How can it be Monday already?

Dragonfly

Weekends where the Eagles play are just so non-stressful that I almost dont realize that theyre going by. Its weird.

Its been a long time since I updated, but thats okay this time because I was busy having a birthday and stuff. As if I was 10 years younger, Ive now been out drinking five nights in a row. Last night was almost an exception, but half a bottle of wine with dinner counts at least a little bit. It was good wine, and dinner was great. CJ took me for steaks. Effin yum.

What else? Pictures of the birthday are forthcoming. Krols second post is pretty rad – were starting a sweet playlist over here. I drove to San Diego and back yesterday morning, which meant that yesterday afternoon I was tired fit to die, but otherwise, Im proud of the way I managed not to be that tired all weekend (which started, as I mentioned, Wednesday).

Im sure theres more, but I have to go install Quickbooks again and deal with all that work stuff. Happy Monday.

edit: Pictures up now. click, or just wait to see them on the rotator over the next few months. I do love that rotator – it makes me happy to see your smilin faces all the time.

Lost/Home Mix – THE METRIC PLAYLIST

Dragonfly

Youve all heard of Nine Inch Nails. This is a song off the European(or non-American version) of With Teeth as an extra track. The first time I heard this was live at the Electric Factory. This is in my opinion one of the better songs from that writing period of Mr. Reznor. Home is not always a place, but maybe a peace of mind. And everyone wants to be at home in their minds. If you cant be at home there than you cant be home anywhere.

Updating from my new computer

Dragonfly

Its called Tombstone, its black and blue, and Ive already case modded it by removing the front cover. Its running Vista and giving me all sorts of trouble that I dont remember from XP, but then again, XP was 7 years ago. So… yeah.

Anyway, I dont have all the monitors up and running yet, but Im working on it. I also think my third monitor died in the same way as the other two. What the hell. Theres more detail (and more to come) in the Forum, but suffice it to say that this was a real hassle, albeit a worthy struggle.

Pics to follow in a few days.

Lost/Home Mix – THE METRIC PLAYLIST

Dragonfly

To start off the mixing I am beginning with a song that would usual fit at the end. Its the Editors with a B-side off the “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors” single. When ever I try to go happy it always ends up dramatic so thats what youll get the first go around. Drama. If you havent heard of the Editors yet, just think Interpol, with more consistency with good songs on one album. So you should get the idea of trying to go home but being lost along the way. We all get lost and hopefully this collection of songs should follow that. Will we find what we want at the end? Remember, home is the place you go when you are alone.

Sports weekend

Dragonfly

I only have an Eagles logo, and despite what I may or may not have said to Dodgers fans last night, Im only an Eagles fan. That didnt stop me from rooting for losing teams Michigan and the Phillies. At least the Eagles won. Of course, they were playing the 49ers, who I always want to win (except yesterday), but who have been terrible since Steve Young hung up his gold pan all those years ago. At least the Cowboys and the Skins both lost yesterday. Now, if the Browns can somehow pull one over on the Giants, a bad weekend for the NFC East will be the Eagles gain.

Back to the grindstone. Anyone got tickets to Hawaii they want to send me?

Good Charlotte Lip Dub

Dragonfly

What does “Lip Dub” even mean?

I dont know because I stole it from some cats way more fortunate than I – these kids got to shoot their “lip dub” in Cyprus. While its now a “private” video on Vimeo, the shoot by “the Cyprus 20” was some “Dont Stop Believin” masterwork. Everybody loves Journey, afterall. I saw it after following a link from Valleywag and decided to respond in kind to show that you dont have to be well-off and world-travellin to lip sync.

Turns out that it helps, though, because Im terrible.

A little background: the girl in the photo is Brit, one of the stars of the original (which I so inexpertly ape here). The picture is of the Cyprus coastline, or so the Internet would have me believe. The shoot was in the garage, under our stalled collage, which itself is a fitting metaphor for something. Im sure, were I back somewhere that essays were required occasionally, I could mine the collage for some english-class gold. Anyway, “Waldorf Worldwide” is definitely an underdog pick, but I think its fitting. So there.

Whatever. Watch. Laugh. This feels a lot like something thatll be funny if you know me in a “ha – what the hell is Matt doing now?” sort of way, and not funny so much otherwise. Sorry to subject you to it. And someday Ill learn to output sweet video from Premiere. Not till I finish building my new computer, though. Damnit, NewEgg! Get me mine HDDs!

It feels like Monday

Dragonfly

Because of the holiday yesterday, Im spending all day today reminding myself that its actually Friday. We have a whole weekend coming up – lets not waste it! CJ got tickets to the Phillies/Dodgers game Saturday, so well head out to that, but thats all weve got planned. Tonight will no doubt be some madness or other, even if its just sitting at home watching movies.

This has been the week of television in our house, too. Ive seen more shows this week than I do in some months. Its just been a perfect storm of television watchers over here – disaster! But at least Im caught up on whatevers happening on your favorite shows.

When my video stops rendering (and I get a decent copy), youll have something awesome to watch. its just a matter of time. Happy Friday.

Umm… Leading British Geneticists are ridiculous.

Dragonfly

This asshole says that evolution is over because (get this) men under 35 pass on far fewer of the mutated genes that supposedly cause evolution.

I say that since Ive never seen evolution happening, it doesnt exist. He must be right. Then again, I plan to pass on some genetic material long after I turn 35, so maybe hes wrong. Evolution is over? Man, if nature had a sense of humor, this dude would wake up, like Gregor Samsa, a giant vermin tomorrow morning. Because yeah, evolution is over.

Metric Playlist.

Dragonfly

Well Matt has given me the freedom to do the music post on Clapboard. So I am going to give you mix-tape playlists in 10 songs, hence the “Metric Playlists”. Youll get one song a week or so, maybe some sooner. This week will just be a “work out the bugs and will be only one song” mix. I have to see if I can get this working properly or not. I have a wide range of stuff but it should all work together in the end. Well start off with a song I first heard in Cancun at a Chinese restaurant. They had sofas at the tables for seats and it was rather nice except for the fact it was open air next to a bay of sorts and smelled like trash. That has nothing to do with the song but its what I remember. Its an older drum & bass song by a group called Boymerang. They did the smoother type of this genre closer to jungle of back in the day. Without the surrounding smells this was perfect for the atmosphere. Listen and enjoy.

Eagles.

Dragonfly

Fuck the Eagles. Theyre having the season that all true Philly fans knew theyd have. Giving games away to sub-par teams is the way weve always played, and this week was no exception. At least were the undisputed champs of last place.

Birthday Bootie

Dragonfly

Last nights bootie was great – Casey got us a table and a VIP area, which was a first for me in 3 years at Bootie. It was awesome. The show was cool – Lady Tigra did a 2-song live set of her mashups, so that was cool. Everyone else took a bunch of pictures, so Ill no doubt be posting some soon.

Welcome to October.

Dragonfly

NOW BURN!!!!

If October was a hair metal track from the 80s or something by Deathklok, thats how it would start. 100+F yesterday? Check. Another one today? Yup. I was like a lobster yesterday, though – by the time I realized that it was hot, it was too late. I mean, it was effin 91 IN THE HOUSE. Jesus. This morning I looked at the weather and saw that it was “only” going to 94 (supposedly) and put myself on high alert. at 10am, I checked, and it was already 84 inside. Fuck that noise – on comes the A/C.

A/C in October. Stupid weather. This should be happening on a weekend. Beach. That would rule.

edit:
In case you thought I was foolish for my earlier decision, heres an anecdote and some figures. My thermometer said that it was only 84in the damp grass that the sun hadnt hit all day (thats where I keep the outdoor temp sensor), so I thought, “Maybe Ill open the house.” I opened the door to check things out and was hit by a blast of hot air. Stepping outside and into the sun, everything just got worse, so I grabbed the temp sensor, put it in the sun on a thick white cloth and left it for a few minutes. This is what it said when I glanced over a little while later. It topped out at ~135, and I A) was glad Id turned on the A/C, B) understood how things got so heat soaked so fast. I mean, last night, it was 15 degrees hotter inside than outside when I went to bed. Still. 3 hours after sundown.

Yeesh. Did I mention that its October 1st?

Pirates of Silicon Alley

Dragonfly

Ive never seen it except in clips here and there, and while its interesting, the music cues are ridiculous. The dialog is set at a certain level (call it, umm… “Low”) and the music comes in all stupid sounding and at a very different level (lets call it “Ear Splitting”). Otherwise, I dig the history and the craziness that everyone hates everyone else. Unless youre a huge nerd, dont watch it. Just my $0.02.

Eagles, feh.

Dragonfly

Way to be the first team to lose outside your conference, Birds. Also, way to play down to the level of your opponents. Also, way to just all-around suck.

This was my last all football weekend – theres going to be more to do around here on weekends for awhile now. Im supposed to do a couple teleprompt gigs in the next couple weeks, too. I need to do more interesting things because I cant update about nothing for the rest of my life.

Happy Sunday night.

2-1 for the Eagles

Dragonfly

So yay for the Birds. The defense put together a great game against Ben “I drive with no helmet because Im invincible” Rothlesberger and his highly-regarded Steelers. McNabb got hurt again (shock!) and Westbrook is day-to-day, so well see how this weeks game goes. Im expecting to be humiliated.

Anyway, not much but working and football right now. Its like the calm before the storm. I hope theres a storm coming, anyway. Its getting boring.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate day!

Tis today, me mateys, when we can thank the Internet for bringing us so much useless news and nonsense, allowing us to celebrate things like Talk Like a Pirate day at all. Silly. I do like Googles take on their page, though.

Now, drink a flaggon of grog, me hearties, and enjoy the day.

the death of computers

Dragonfly

Its been a tough month for computers here, Ill tell you what. The carnage is almost unbelievable. My five-monitor experiment was a disaster and I somehow broke three of them just by using them. Sad times. My workspace feels all cramped and I cant get anything done – its amazing. Besides that, Ive been having troubles with video (not good when Im trying to edit it sometimes) and Im entirely out of HDD space. Did I mention that my CD writer doesnt read blank CDs anymore? Its a weird world, Ill tell you that.

Anyway, other than computer troubles, things have been going along swimmingly here. Im enjoying Anathem, and enjoying the fact that its taking me longer to read than one trip on an airplane. The disadvantage of that, of course, is that I have to work some but all I want to do is read. Im not sure that Im enjoying it as much as Quicksilver, but it certainly has its moments.

Thats it for now. Just wanted to say hi.

201 0

Damnit, Eagles!

Dragonfly

What can I say? Defense needed a little of its old “bend-dont-break” style back? WRs needed to work a little more to get open down the field to keep Donovan from having to check down on EVERY FRIGGIN PASS PLAY? I dunno, something.

Our venerable QB looked great again last night and except for that boneheaded non-touchdown, Jackson looked like he might indeed become a full, grown-up threat. He didnt look like TO, though. Damn that guy is good.

Anyway, I friggin hate Dallas, and Im furious and depressed that we couldnt beat them, but at least it was a hell of a game. Who do we play next week?

221 0

aaaand its been a week.

Dragonfly

Hey. Wow. Jeez.

I dont know where the time went. Well, I sort of do. I was sick and then allergy-y for basically all 4 days of the week last week. I managed to get some work done, but then I bought Anathem and that stopped. When Im sick I play Civ4, it turns out, as thats also something I did last week.

Football was a travesty yesterday, and I hold little hope that today will improve it, given that the Eagles have to play the Cowboys today. Fuckers.

Pictures of Jared & Heathers Wedding are up here, if youre interested. Thats them there, cutting the cake. Great times had by all, as far as I can tell. I mean, my pictures turned out awesome, at least.
