New Camera and Wine.Woot recognition

commentThe other day, I made the comments shortlist on Wine.Woot.

I know that this is pretty much just a "most recent decent comments" section, but still - I'd like to crow about it anyway.

Of course, I bought the wine and I've been to the vineyard more than the rest of the wooters combined (maybe), so it's not that impressive, but still, I like that I made it on there.  The wine was on a great special - $20/bottle for a bottle that they usually charge $45 for, so that's nice.  And it'll be good to have some excellent pinot to drink on hand.

Canon T2iIn other big news, I bought the new Canon T2i - the first SLR that really made me want to replace my aging XTi. So far, the biggest difference (and I've only shot test shots), is the low-light performance.  It's amazing what a difference ISO6400 makes when you're used to shooting at a max of ISO1600.  Couple that with the fact that I'm soon going to get a lens that I'm buying specifically because it's going to give me similar results to the lens on Dad's Yashica, and you end up with a happy Matt.

Once I've taken my first real set of pictures, I'll post some up here, of course, but they'll have to be shrunken some, because 18MP is a shitload of megapixels.

Additionally, the T2i shoots FullHD video, so this is going to be the camera for my brownie projects in the forseeable future, which is awesome.  I've been through too many tape-based minicams that all suck ass and break after no time at all, so it's time to upgrade to something in a product family I trust (I still love my XTi and am keeping it to shoot random crap with).  I can't wait to have my first FullHD brownie project to post.  Fun times.

Okay, the full (huge) wine.woot thing is after the break.

WHS Console software uses the RD port

So I guessed this a long time ago, but I never got around to testing it until this morning, despite the easy-ass test parameters.  Ever since I installed Windows Home Server, I haven't been able to use the Connector Console, and I'm literally the only one on the internet with this problem.  Other people are fools and have installed the wrong version of the software or haven't installed it at all, but I'm not that fool.  I'm the fool who changes my Remote Desktop ports  at installation (because who trusts Microsoft's implementation of anything security related, right?  Might as well add a little obscurity to the mix, too), and then forgets about it.  So Remote Desktop worked, but my Connector software didn't.

I looked for a solution, but all the other idiots were drooling all over themselves trying to click on the weather applet on their taskbar to get into their home server, and no one had any idea what the hell I was talking about in regards to my specific questions.  Anyway, since I finally tested it this morning, I thought I'd put it out there for anyone else who might be in my shoes - if you've changed your Remote Desktop port on your Windows Home Server, your Connector software won't work.  WHS Connector uses port 3389.

Now to see if you can change the port that the software looks on so I can go back to using a non-standard RD port.

Orange Juice

Juice!I picked my first orange!  It was great!  I drank it as juice, the out-of-focus picture of which is right here.  That's all for now - two more oranges to pick, but they're surprisingly not too rind-y and light and sweet in the juice.  Excellent!

It's a big week here

It's a big week in the life of Matt.

I'm going to Culver City every day to work on a show for the Food Network (expanding PCW's experience and contacts in the TV industry), Emily is still out on Bon Jovi, and I'm starting to get a little more serious about doing more real computer work.  I have a bunch of MWS stuff to do first, but I need more (and more local) clients if I'm going to make this JVS thing work.  So that's all big stuff.  I have other big news that I'll let drop in the near future - probably this coming weekend.  A couple things have to fall into place first, but they're coming.

Working every day from somewhere else is tough, especially with the dog here.  I'm up early (it's barely after six and I've already showered, let Cleo out and started work on MWS' site again), and I really should take her on a walk before I go to work.   So I probably will.  And I need to bathe her cause she's getting smelly.  I can tell because she's sitting on my lap, and i can smell her.  Maybe a shower tonight before I go to bed.  That wouldn't be a bad idea.

Anyway, things here are going pretty well, if busily - and I'm even remembering to water my blog.   Oh, and check out my wine post on the forum - it's detailing the process of making wine that I'm engaged in - fun times!  I'm sure I'm totally fucking it up royally, but whatever.  I like the forum format for keeping track of a process in one place.  It's like a mini-blog.  In fact, were I to start a blog today, I'd seriously consider using it.  It would really facilitate replying and conversation, and I could do longer-term things like winemaking in one post or a subforum, if they got really long. That's not to say that I don't like this format, cause I do.

Okay, back to work for me so I can walk the dog in an hour.  Fun times.
