Quickie this year

Hope your holiday was as awesome as mine. Immediate family and lots of food was the order of the day for me.  It's by far the shortest Christmas I've ever had, but it worked as a template for moving into the future.  As I've been thinking a lot this week, it's up to my generation now to take the lead and to decide whether we're going to create a new place and time for ourselves to get together and spend the time we've always enjoyed.  Up until now, it's been our parents' impetus, and I understand that - they're sisters - but we were raised close and I'd like to believe that it's worth it to us to do *something* together, even if it's shorter, smaller, different, whatever.

Anyway, it's New Years' week.  This is really the only week that doesn't exist - it's a void of time between Christmas and New Years, no present, just past and future, so of course I'm thinking about what used to be and how that will shape my tomorrows.  Anyway, I'm not really a "resolutions" type of guy, but I do like to look at what I want to do more of and what I want to do less of and try to think of ways to make those things a reality.  I'm not good at ranking things, but at least I have this week to think about them and maybe come up with ways to turn thought into action.

Hope you guys are on break during this lost week and that you can spend it doing the funnest stuff you can think of.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Merry ChristmasFrom me, myself and I to everyone who comes here or reads on their feed reader - Merry Christmas.

This is the first Christmas of my lifetime that I haven't spent at my parents' house back east, and while I do love not being cold and being able to be at my own house right up 'till the day, it's a little bittersweet to miss the fires in the fireplace and the folks that I'd always get to see when I was in Media.  I'll also miss the extended family at Christmas II this year - it's now on us to make new traditions.  I think we're up to it.

Anyway, I hope this year finds everyone in the bosom of family and friends, surrounded by all the love you can handle.

Quick Update from Perth

Boy, Howdy!  Time flies when you're living in the future!

Has it really been forever, or just about that?  Yes.  Well, it's been tiring, fun, and more than a little absurd, as you'd expect of a tour.  Yesterday was one of the best days I've had since this tour started, and I wanted to mention it because there are so many days when I'm tired or bored-but-unable-to-do-stuff or simply sans-internet.  Yesterday was an unexpected day off here in Perth and because of the time difference between New Zealand and here, I woke up early.  Quickly deciding to rent a car, I was just heading out to go wine tasting in the nearby Swan River Valley when I ran into Bobby. He was game to come when I invited, so we grabbed the car and headed out.

For the record, the hardest part of driving on the wrong side of the road is the turn signals.  Even shifting with my left hand isn't nearly as annoying as trying to hit your turn signal and turning on the wipers.  Also up and down do the opposite things (obviously, of course, but still strange when you're turning left and have forced yourself to use your right hand to reach for the signal stick). Despite the wrong-side driving and the traffic circles (that go the wrong way), I managed just fine.

Bobby and I visited Sandalford (who is providing wine consideration for our Australia tour, it turns out AND who opened a 1982 Port for us - once-in-a-lifetime taste!) and Upper Reach before having lunch at a brewery called Feral.  I took Bobby back into town so he could get something done, then I ran back up to the valley to visit Lancaster and River Bank.  Excellent stuff.  The prices were reasonable and the whole process was fascinating - an imperfect copy of the polished slickness of the Napa Valley.  I bought a couple bottles that are going in my kit in the vain hope that they survive the potential heat and then US customs.  Seems doubtful, but worth the risk.

Anyway, I took only a few pictures, but I'll post 'em when I get home.  I need to get one of those USB card reader thingies to drop in my kit here so I can use it when I'm out and about.

That's all for now.  Future-Matt, signing off.

throwing away cable

CablesJust a stupid little note to show a picture of a small box of cables that I threw away yesterday while going through my computer cable box.   The box was full of cables and part of all the tech crap from the living room that I was moving downstairs to my new server rack, and the contents in this picture are the remnants from several such boxes.  There's definitely the purple breakout cable from the (original?) Radeon All-in-Wonder card, some IDE and SATA cable, and plenty of other crap.

I also managed to liberate some things that'll go on my collage as soon as I can make space to work on it again.  I'm actually going to try to start that process by selling extra servers this afternoon.  Craigslist is my friend.  Anyone wanna buy the heaviest Dell servers ever invented?  It's a blade-style thing that fits 6 servers in a 3u space.  Cool, but I'll never find use for it.  I mean, I'll never find use for two.  I'm already thinking about all the awesome nerdy things I can do with one of them in my server rack.

Anyway, happy Wednesday.

sleep is great

So, after ill-advised drinks in Brisbane last night, I slept my entire day away today, give or take.  I mean, I walked about a little, but just sitting in the room reading and laying about (and following the goddamn Eagles' squeaker on the interwebs) was my goal of the day.  and boy did i win at my goal.  I may go out and get a bite to eat in a little while (i realized, while trying to assess why I was hungover this morning, that part of it had to do with the fact that my last meal was dinner on Saturday, and the sandwich on the plane at noon on Sunday probably didn't count as much as I thought it did.  Days off are great for my diet, I guess, although eating less on days ON would be more beneficial, since I only have 2 days off.  Ah well.

Anyway, I've missed the internet while I was in Brisbane, but it doesn't seem to have been an awfully eventful few days online or anything.  Happy Sunday/Monday night!

On the road again (and again)

From the Unoriginal Title Department comes this, the latest installment of the unoriginal-titled epic series known as Clapboard.

I'm leaving for Tokyo and points beyond, but I'll be in touch better than ever as long as you email me.

Thanksgiving was spectacular, Scott & Sharon's visit has been a lot of fun (ask me about 3am steaks sometime!) and the 10 days that have led me to this have been more than ridiculous mayhem in a pretty good way.  Go Eagles, beat Bears today - show the NFL that you're not the wishy-washy losers that you often appear to be, and make the effort to win something significant today.

I, for my part, will make an effort to be creative and do interesting things, despite the hellish travel schedule and the near-permanent jet lag.  I love you all.

Back again!

So I just got back from Vegas.  Vegas is one of those places that I know suck, but after I've been away from it awhile, I forget and feel nostalgic for no good reason.  At least the gig went well and everyone still loves us.  Supposedly.

I'm overwhelmed by the idea that the year is, for all intents and purposes, over for me on the 28th.  I've got Christmas shopping to do, people!  New Years' to plan! A month worth of stuff to do!  But, like all good things (and all bad things, too), this year must come to an end, and for me, it's ending a month early.  Fucksticks.  But the good thing about that is that it has me thinking about the past year while I still have nearly 10% of it technically left.  I can lament the fact that 2010 has been one giant clusterfuck of a year for me while still having time to do something to change that fact.  Hell, by January 1st, if I'm careful, I might be able look back at a year with a totally different balance point.  Wouldn't that be something?

Anyway, I just wanted to update because I've been bad about it (shocker!) and tell you that I have not, indeed, taken any pictures of note, shot any video of note, nor even written anything of note in the recent past.  I'd love to be able to link to something new that I've done, and I will love it when I finally manage it.

Happy Sunday, and Go Eagles tomorrow night!
