Cool Picture of a Bell
I like this picture. I don't know why I didn't pay attention to it before. I hope you like it too.

failing to update
Okay, here I am again, on Nathaniel's Birthday, chillin' back at the Forum in Inglewood, trying to kill time until someone comes that I'm supposed to meet. I have literally nothing to do here for a few hours, but that's the way of Inglewood - no one here has anything to do. I wrote the beginning of another post that I may re-write in the near future, but I've been too damn busy to mess around with "real" writing over the last few days. Fucking busy-ness.
Today, it's How Sweet the Sound, a travelling gospel show. Yesterday, I went with Candice to help out with a cooking show concept that wasn't really all that good, but someone must've been looking to spend money, because they're on the way with the thing already. Silliness. Between that and this, I'm getting my fill of live, untelevised stage shows this week.
Anyway, now I have to go to friggin' Detroit on November 6th and miss Bootie and Casey's birthday weekend shenanigans, whatever they may be, all for some work. Work? Well, I could use the money, right? Who couldn't? These days, turning down any kind of paying work is sort of like killing a puppy - just abhorrent, and something no sane person would do.

Fucking Car Towed!
Came out from dinner last night to find my car gone. Turns out that I'd parked it in a space that wasn't allowed after 6pm. Fuck.
Anyway, that was $280 that I didn't have. Also, now I have to pay the parking ticket, too.

Cheffin' it up!
Last night, I made a tasty wine sauce to compliment some broiled Londone Broil that I made. Scott showed me a broiling trick with tin foil that I'd never seen when I was in Portland, so I was eager to use it, and the steak, while it had probably lived in the freezer for too long, was tasty. The sauce, designed in true French fashion to mask the potential blandness of the steak, worked flawlessly. So yay for that.
Right now, I'm at Cathryn's, giving Craig a much-needed break, then I'm going to head home and build an awesomely-huge shelf in the garage for my stuff and Tim's stuff. It'll be fun. I'll take pictures for you. This is the build-up for the desk hutch and the new office configuration. Should be fun.

In Portland
Well, Hello there!
I know it's been awhile since I've updated, but I'm in Portland, home of my most faithful readers (my only readers?), Scott & Sharon. Last time I hollered on here, I was in NYC and in a video. Now, I'm not. The plane ride home was forced to land in Indianapolis because a guy had some medical emergency, so we did. It only added about an hour to our flight. Pretty weak.
After that, I was home long enough to re-arrange some work and then to do laundry, then I left again for a 14-hour drive up the I-5 to Portland. It was actually a pretty great drive. I mean, it was long and all, but still. Yesterday, we went out to the coast, which turns out to be quite a hike, but worth it. Astoria, Oregon isn't anything like Astoria, Queens, that's for sure. It is very pretty, in a weathered-by-the-sea-air kind of way. We had amazing weather, too. It's like I'm a travelling high-pressure system. It is a little rainy today, which is cool with me. We're probably going wine tasting in a little while. Sweet.

Anyone else worried about the Eagles?
I've watched some Eagles football this summer. Everyone is only talking about Michael Vick (and who cares?) but I want to talk about the lines. I feel like we've probably got the receiving corps that we've been wanting for years, but how on earth can we take advantage of the talent we have there (and still have at the Quarterback position, despite the fact that I was a complainer) when the line isn't healthy to start off the season. I don't know if we have the line to keep the protection strong enough to allow for running lanes and passing lanes and time to get the ball moving forward. Proving that I don't know very much about football, I'm concerned about the left tackle position overall. Maybe it's the book about the homeless kid that Tampa Bay gave me to read, maybe it's watching little Mike Hart run off #1 draft pick Left Tackle Jake Long, but I'm concerned that we don't have a rockstar at that position. Can Jason Peters get the job done? Let's hope.
Also, what are we doing at tight end? Are we really going to hold on to four QBs? No, right? Can the linebackers get it done? I don't know if i have more questions and concerns this year because I've been paying closer attention, or if it's actually not shaping up to be a good season for us. We'll see. Go friggin' Eagles.

Whoa, hey
I'm getting lamer at updates, even when I do things to update about. I'm going to blame the heat. And the smoke.
So where are we? We're in LA, surrounded by the burning hills of, well, just about everywhere, and we're sitting at the computer working on yet another redesign of shoehardware.com. I've bought tickets for NYC, but I haven't yet gotten around to getting a place to stay. We'll change that in a heartbeat or two. To the sounds of my neighbors' chainsaw, it would seem. Good for phone calls.
What else? I've been house-sitting. I have less than a week left, and I have yet to play tennis. I went to Vegas with Kieran. Somehow, we'd never been to Vegas together in any capacity before. This time, we went cause he got a free room and tickets to Love, the Beatles show. We managed to have a pretty good time, even if it was less than the ultimate in Vegas debauchery. Isn't everything less than the ultimate in Vegas debauchery? We did see a guy fall through a mirror and off the stairway he was on to the floor 12 feet below. If he didn't break his neck or back or lacerate any important arteries, I'm sure he's fine. It only took paramedics 45 minutes to arrive. At least I had plenty of time to finish my drink.
Okay, I'm back to editing. Let me know if you're going to be in NYC end of next week, cause I will.

this could probably be a couple of tweets
Do normal people know about the facebook login change that happened over the summer? I never thought about it until I sat down to FB to look at something on Casey's account and she used her email address to log in. When I asked her about it, it was like she'd never heard of the username thing. Facebook's main (only?) strength is the fact that normal, non-geeky people feel like they can use it, and if we're splitting it now into People Who Follow Nerd News and People Who Don't, FB may have cause to worry.
Also, I like Obama, but he's been a year on the world stage and done nothing, as far as I can tell to end either war we're in. WTF.
Also, also, I slept through the moon's destruction last night. I'm sad - I wanted to see that fucker one more time.
Also, also, also, Happy Friday.

Happy October!
So it's October. Welcome to it. This is my favorite month.
October should be where August is, but we were just too lazy to rename it when the Gregorians added January and February to the year. Weird. (Imagine how short Winter is without January and February, too.) It's Breast Cancer Awareness month, which promises lots of people talking about and showing off boobs and quite a few people offended by talking about and showing off boobs. Fun times. October is the month of Octoberfest, the time when you can get fruity beer and no one will care because you're just celebrating your culture, man. October also houses the birthdays of both my Sylva cousins and my dad and of course, me. It's got 31 days and ends in Halloween, which is rad, and tends to start warm and end cold with cool inbetween. I like it.
Now it's time to take care of some administrivia - laundry and the like. Fun times for all.

Building Spree!
UPDATE: Gallery of the first part of the process is now after the break.
It's not 100% accurate to call it a "spree," but considering how little I've done in the past few months, two shelves are a real start.
At the end of last week, I built the Tim Stormer Memorial Shelf for the garage, aiming at getting his stuff into a place where it actually had somewhere to be (rather than on the floor), and that was a roaring success. Yesterday afternoon, I reinforced the "back" desk and last night I put together a nice little hutch for atop that desk. It's actually quite a nice piece. It's still un-stained, but that's what this afternoon is for.
Also for this afternoon, I've been taking things out of my office (an absurdly difficult task, actually) and cleaning the dirtier things as I move them (how the laser printer is still working is beyond me). I'm going to install a ceiling fan this afternoon, too. If I'm really lucky, I'll get the fan installed, the hutch stained AND the desk moved into place, all before tonight. We'll see, though. I don't want to be overzealous. you know. I need a new rug in here, too. Maybe.
Fun times. And I swear I have pictures to put up, but I'm in the building zone, man - the ZONE.

I've missed you!
Portland was awesome and New York was long if you beg to differ I'll tell you you're wrong.
There. A poem for you. That's what you come to clapboard for, right? The poetry? And the naked chicks. Sorry about that, by the way - I know you're still waiting, but I'll get around to it eventually. Probably on a subdomain, but still.
Driving to and from Portland was pretty amazing - the changes in the enviornment were breathtaking. Even though it took a long time to see those changes occur, my brain works slow, so it's okay. I'd love to do the drive someday with a time-lapse camera pointed out a side window shooting a picture every minute or so, too.
Anyway, Scott & Sharon's place is awesome - you should probably go visit them to see for yourself. I'm already looking forward to the chance to go back. I bought a couple of bottles of Oregon Pinot Noir, which were good, but a little more expensive than their CA counterparts. Probably to do with the amount of competition and the level of recognition that California wines enjoy. Regardless of their quality, if you price a wine high, it's going to get a little mindshare as a "good" wine. At least, that's how I'd do it.
I'll have pics up a little later, now that I'm back in the swing of things.

I'm in the "This Is It" Video
This video makes me nostalgic for like three months ago.
If you watch till 1:17, you can see me clapping in the weird circle thing we did there. The cuts are pretty fast, but you definitely get a sense of how much footage they shot and how great a lot of it was. I wish I'd been around for the green screen stuff in particular - how fun would that have been?
Anyway, check it out. Video now after the break.

Teetering and Tethering in NYC
So I've arrived in NYC, and I'm sitting at Starbucks, but I'm not using their WiFi. I'm using my Pre. I've failed to get the WiFi tethering to work yet, but the USB tethering works without a hitch on my Ubuntu 9.04 system. Pretty rad. I'm sure I'll figure out the WiFi thing sooner or later, but it's good to be online. I figure that I can use some of my time before the store opens to work on the WiFi, as well as on getting the function keys on this Toshiba working under Ubuntu. Stupid windows-centric world.
More updates on the trip etc, coming later. Pictures, too, esp. since I didn't forget my camera as I thought I did.

Girls with Blogs are hot
I just saw this on a sidebar while I was searching for info on how to reformat my add-to-cart area on ShoeHardware, and I agree with it, at least in theory. Not Facebook, not twitter, and not tumblr, but actual, written blogs.
That's all.
Oh, no it's not. I'm off to watch the Eagles play in a little while. Stupid NFL network. Anyone over on that side of town and wanna meet up? Rawr.

You should probably come to the Translation Party!
This is kinda fun, in a giggle-alone-at-your-computer sort of way.
It's a website that translates your phrase from English to Japanese back and forth until the results can't be distilled anymore. You end up with some pretty hilarious stuff. For example, "I hate when birds poop on my car" eventually becomes "I have bird droppings on my car." http://www.translationparty.com/#3465456 I like watching the translation happen, too - it's a weird experience in machine translation.
