Hotel Review - Crowne Plaza, Tulsa

What the hell, I can't resist.

Pros:

  • Fitted Bottom Sheet
  • Comfy reading chair

Cons:

  • A/C didn't work
  • mattress less comfy than average
  • windows didn't open
  • no free WiFi

Notes:
Why is it so goddamn impossible to get A/C working? (Why is A/C the shorthand for Air Conditioning, anyway?  Shouldn't it be A.C.?)  Again, I set it at various temperatures and nothing happened except the fan blew and blew.  Weak.
I had an outdoor-facing window this time.  Only notable after the Dallas indoor-facing window.  There was a sliding-glass door in this window, but it was nailed shut with a weird, ghetto solution that involved plastic over the finger pull-well.
I'm going to list "no free wifi" every time I do this despite the fact that it's going to happen everywhere.  Simple solution - Free. Fucking. WiFi.  If you're so desperate to make additional money, go airline-style and charge for turning on the television and flushing toilets, too.  Hell, charge for hanger use and an hourly rate for the bed by the pound so single, skinny folks pay less than fat couples.  I mean, we wear the beds out much less, right?

Recommend: Maybe.

That's all.  Crowne Plaza is in a neat building and Tulsa is TINY, but it's not unattractive.  Thinking about it now, it's a little like a dust-bowl doppelganger of Portland, Maine, somehow. I'm not even sure why I think that - age and spacing of the infrastructure, maybe?  This is a broken train of thought; I'm quitting this connection immediately and taking no credit or blame for it.  There were a couple of local bars, but I walked by some of them last night and many of them were just about closed at 10pm.  I guess it *was* monday night.

Okay, Dashboard is breaking my head, and Bon Jovi ain't on for another hour or so.  Bus to Atlanta tonight.  Fun!

Hotel Review - Westin Dallas CityCenter

It's occurred to me that I could do a pretty thorough series of hotel reviews while on this tour, and, while I'm not that interested in writing (or reading) reviews, I thought it might be a neat experiment to try it out at least once.  I don't have any tools like blacklights or checklists to keep myself on task, and I don't have an overarching theme or clear to the review - yet more ammunition against writing anything, but still.  As a final caveat, I'm a low-maintenance traveller.  I read other reviews and wonder how these people even get through the night.  I don't care about the front desk, the bellhops or really, the size of the room.  I'm just interested in my experience, so here it is.

some Dead Sea Scrolls are in St. Paul

Just went and saw the Dead Sea Scrolls which happen to be at the Minnesota Science Museum across the street.  That's a bit of a misnomer, actually, since there are 500+ pages with countless fragments and the MSM only had a paltry 5 on display.   Whether it was the Israeli Historical Society (or whomever) being stingy or the museum just not having the clout to get a real exhibit's worth of scrolls is anyone's guess (and I'm sure you'd get different answers depending on whom you asked), but I couldn't, in good conscience, recommend the exhibit to anyone with more than a passing interest in the scrolls.

Dead Sea ScrollsGiven their significance as the oldest recorded notation of the early books of the bible (written between 300BCE and 70AD), I feel justified in my disappointment.  There were a lot of clay pots and stone sarcophagi (cleverly implied but never stated to be from the Dead Sea or the era of the scrolls), but precious little in terms of meat - there was almost no notation of the scrolls' text that were on display - there was a translation, thankfully, but nothing tying in the claim that over 800 people wrote the various fragments (handwriting comparisons would have been great) and no real discussion on the three languages used (Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic).  It would have been a nice touch to show us different scrolls in different languages and to talk about the ways that the language used influenced the text or reasons that the languages differ in the first place.

There are supposedly two schools of thought on the Dead Sea Scrolls' creators: first, that they were all written by a local, distinct tribe and second, that the caves were sort of a repository for the collective knowledge of the proto-jews who roamed and lived on the land in the area.  Only 13 miles from Jerusalem, the Dead Sea Scrolls' creators seem more likely (to my limited knowledge) to fall into the latter group, what with the 800 scribes, three languages and broad range of topics discussed.

I'm also interested in the non-canonical writings found in the scrolls (glossed over as "books not included in official religious text" or some shit) and in the etched-on-brass treasure list - I can see a Dan Brown-like book about the search for the riches of the Jews.  Of course, some scholars think these caches of wealth have already been discovered and no longer exist.  I'd buy that, what with the many armies that have crisscrossed that cursed land for the last 4000 years.

Anyway, it was neat to see the Dead Sea Scrolls, and it reminded me that I really need to pull the trigger on buying books about things that I see because I never do it when I get home (the desire fades as the experience becomes memory).  Maybe I can compromise by buying from Amazon when I get home to save money and not lug books, but also get stuff to help me retain and even extend what I've learned.  I'm currently jonesing for a Kindle, although an iPad would be a better device to view a book on, given that I'd really like to see pictures of the scrolls as well as read (and read about) them.

Happy Thursday!

Happy Fuckin' Easter!

Colored Eggs!

Bunnies!

Peeps!

I'm sitting on my awesome balcomy at an awesome little hotel in Palm Desert.  The fact that I never know if 'desert' is supposed to have one 's' or two aside, this place is really a gem.  It helps immensely that they upgraded the shit out of the room and now the wide balcony overlooks the pool, that the bedroom is at be back and secluded so you can sleep while i type, and the minikitchen's fridge kept my drinks cool all night long.  If there weren't so many damn kids everywhere, I'd be pretty much perfectly happy.  And that's not the hotel's fault, but the fault of so many people deciding that kids are the way to go.  Meh.

Anyway, my last gig before heading back out with Bon Jovi on Tuesday went swimmingly - easy in, easy out, no troubles.  Driving back to LA today is going to be a damn pain in the ass with the traffic, but otherwise, today should be a low-key, do-nothing day, which will be nice, given the flurry of madness that has to happen over the next few days.  Also, who knew that the entire drive to Palm Springs is now suburban sprawl.  When I used to drive out to see Cathy, it wasn't nearly that bad.  I guess five years of real-estate boom can really fuck things up for isolated places.

Okay, it's time to check out.  Palm Desert gets an A from me.  The black palmrests on this mac get a C+.

Last Day on Food Network

Tomorrow is my last day and the last shows in this cycle for "Guy's Big Bite" filming.  It's been a good run, but I'll be glad to have a few days to get ready to go back out on the road with Bon Jovi (really?  yes, really.) and to do one quick job in Palm Springs.  Lots of prompter work right now - lots.

I don't have lots of computer work - the phone has gone from jangly to silent just at the flip of the year.  I've gotta turn that around, but I'm not sure how I'm going to manage that.  Anyone know someone hiring an ecommerce guy?  Or maybe looking to upgrade or outfit an office?  That's actually fun-ass work, in my opinon.

Okay, time to sleep again.  I'm so busy I don't even have time to browse for porn.  Weak.
