Palm Pre woes

Palm PreJust performed an applications reset on my Pre because there was some weird issue where there was a blank application that was keeping my phone from updating some of the programs that needed upgrading.  Doing a reset where I deleted and re-installed the applications on the Pre (and restarted twice) seemed to solve the problem, at least for the time being.  I've read that the problem came back for some poor schmuck, but at the moment, it seems solved on my part.

I've been thinking about phones because I'd really like to have a phone abroad, and I think I saved my carte-orange from Paris, so I could use that there.  We'll see.  Maybe an unlocked phone from craigslist is the way to go.  I dunno.  Unlocked phones sort of confuse me - can't I just pop a new SIM into an AT&T phone or whatever?

Been a little while, huh?

So the pattern emerges.  I get home and stop updating.  It's not that nothing is happening (because when does anything ever happen?), it's that I get lethargic and don't want to write.  And I even probably have things to write.  Maybe.

I started work on a new home server using Amahi, but had to stop because we had a week's worth of guests.  My initial reaction was positive, but as time went on, it started to become clear that Amahi was like a lot of software out there, trying to do things that aren't within its purview.  I understand why they want to run their own DNS server, but I already have one up and configured.  The fact that their services only really work right if you use their DNS server is a deal breaker for me, I think.  Couple that with the fact that the Greyhole service is barely acceptable and doesn't seem to properly balance storage across disks and you can start to see a product that's close, but no cigar.  Maybe in a month when I'm back again I can try whatever the newest version is and see if any of this has been ironed out.  The DNS thing is in their DNA, so I don't see that changing.

What else?  I re-formatted my eee in anticipation of its next trip abroad - it's now running UNR v10.04 and running it very well, it seems. I'm not so much a fan of the giant icons and cartoony look of the style of netbook remixes, but i do like that everything just works and I also like having some space still on my 4GB of internal memory.

I've been working in slo-mo since I've been home, having a terrible time motivating myself to get anything done.  It's like when I have more things to do than i have hours in the day, I just work steadily.  When I could theoretically get everything done, I sit around and stare at nothingness.  Ghetto.

Speaking of sitting around, I can't do too much more of that - gotta get a move on.  Banking and trip prep doesn't do itself, after all.  Errands! Parking tickets! Packing! Fun!

WHS Console software uses the RD port

So I guessed this a long time ago, but I never got around to testing it until this morning, despite the easy-ass test parameters.  Ever since I installed Windows Home Server, I haven't been able to use the Connector Console, and I'm literally the only one on the internet with this problem.  Other people are fools and have installed the wrong version of the software or haven't installed it at all, but I'm not that fool.  I'm the fool who changes my Remote Desktop ports  at installation (because who trusts Microsoft's implementation of anything security related, right?  Might as well add a little obscurity to the mix, too), and then forgets about it.  So Remote Desktop worked, but my Connector software didn't.

I looked for a solution, but all the other idiots were drooling all over themselves trying to click on the weather applet on their taskbar to get into their home server, and no one had any idea what the hell I was talking about in regards to my specific questions.  Anyway, since I finally tested it this morning, I thought I'd put it out there for anyone else who might be in my shoes - if you've changed your Remote Desktop port on your Windows Home Server, your Connector software won't work.  WHS Connector uses port 3389.

Now to see if you can change the port that the software looks on so I can go back to using a non-standard RD port.

Orange Juice

Juice!I picked my first orange!  It was great!  I drank it as juice, the out-of-focus picture of which is right here.  That's all for now - two more oranges to pick, but they're surprisingly not too rind-y and light and sweet in the juice.  Excellent!

Drew Hawaii

Hanauama BayWe made it back from Hawaii!

2500 miles from mainland in the middle of the Pacific (and south of the Tropic of Cancer), Hawaii provided the backdrop of Drew's Bachelor Weekend.  The surprise worked and Drew had a great time, which was the #1 most important thing - in fact, it was the only thing.  As icing on the cake, I had a great time, too.  We had great weather, rented fun scooters and drove almost all the way around the island.  It rained, after a fashion, for a little while on a couple of days, but it wasn't even enough to get you wet.  Awesome.  We swam in the balmy-warm ocean, saw sea turtles and pineapple fields, and managed to avoid sunburn almost altogether.

Anyway, check out my gallery of all the images if you want.

Good things about the trip so far

Yesterday, I was too harsh on the trip thus far, and I intend to correct that this morning.

First of all, I was in New York.  New York is one of my favorite places in the country, and although I get jaded because it's also the place I visit most often, it's only fair to note that I *always* like visiting New York.  It's a slice of home for me, and I love being there.

Second, while in NYC, I got to see three of my favorite people - Mike, Russ and Megan.  Megs was the big surprise because she lives in DC, but since she had to be in town for a work thing, they sent her up a night early and she rallied and came out late-night style to hang out with me.  Awesome.  Michael trekked all the way back into the city for a quick dinner, and Russ came across town to have drinks - everyone went out of their way to come hang out with me and that's an honor.  And besides old friends, I also got to see Lindsay, who took me to a hilarious late-night "happy hour" Broadway event where Stanley Tucci ended up pouring me a Chopin on the rocks.  She also suggested and then met me for pizza when I was craving New York's finest.  Good stuff.

For the first time in years, I didn't have to stay in a Hotel, either.  I stayed in a friend's studio apartment, which was also pretty cool.  While it wasn't free, it was cheaper than a hotel and pretty much exactly the same thing - a studio (except this had a kitchen that I didn't have time to use) apartment in New York.  In fact, it was bigger than most of the hotel rooms I rent.  It's in a great neighborhood on the upper west side, just a quick train ride to work - a fact that makes it more convenient in some ways than even my favorite place in Times Square (that's now $400/night to which I'll never return) That was pretty cool.

After NY, I took a bus to Hershey.  I hear that I could have taken a train, which also would have been cool (and a little faster), but I didn't think to check on that, so a bus it was.  No trouble, and I got to read my Kindle more.  I've been reading the shit out of things on my Kindle - it's almost time to start looking through the Project Gutenberg library and such for more fodder.  I still haven't bought anything from the Kindle store because fuck DRM and because I have enough to read already.  Eventually, when I have no other choice I certainly will buy something, but I'm in no hurry to load my Kindle up with hundreds of dollars worth of bits and bytes that I don't even get to own.  But having and using the Kindle is a definite plus for me while I'm on the road.

Hershey has been relaxing.  I've been catching up on my sleep (I think I got nine consecutive hours two nights in a row now!) and generally keeping out of harm's way.  Set up at the venue went way more smoothly than I thought it would, and I could be ready to prompt in under an hour (and that includes having pulled the monitors off the stage to keep rain off them).  It's looking more and more like I might have to head back to the east coast for the Meadowlands shows, but we'll see - it's all still totally up in the air right now.  It's not like I'd be buying a ticket for Monday night or anything, right?

Okay, this update is way too long.  Tonight I fly home and meet Drew for the start of his Bachelor party weekend.  I hope he doesn't have any clue as to our activities (any more clues than I've already given him, that is), but you never know.  He's smart, and I'm loose-lipped - a deadly combination for secrets.  We'll see soon enough, right?

Happy Wednesday.
